Ten platforms, and an honest look at what leaving each one costs

You have probably already tried one of these. Every page below compares Book Visit Now with a specific platform. Each page states what that platform actually charges, including the parts left out of the headline price. Each page also says plainly when you should stay where you are.

Book Visit Now is a $24.99 a month app made by one person. There are several businesses on this list we are simply the wrong choice for. The page for each platform says which.

Marketplace platforms. These run a consumer app. They can charge you a commission on new clients.

• Booksy. Booksy includes a marketplace listing at no additional charge. Its optional Boost program charges 30% of a qualifying new client's first visit, subject to a $10 minimum and $100 maximum.
• Fresha. Fresha charges a one-time 20% commission, with a $6 minimum, for new clients acquired through its marketplace. Bookings through your own direct booking link are not subject to the marketplace commission.
• Vagaro. Vagaro offers marketplace listings without a standard booking commission. Its optional Vera Fill My Books promotional service charges 20% for qualifying new-customer bookings and 5% for existing-customer bookings.
• Mindbody. Mindbody charges a 20% marketplace commission, capped at $30, on a new customer's first qualifying purchase through its marketplace.
• Square Appointments. Square offers eligible beauty and personal care businesses a free Square Go marketplace profile when they use Square Appointments with online booking enabled. Square does not charge a marketplace booking commission, although its standard payment-processing fees still apply.

No marketplace, priced for teams.

• GlossGenius. GlossGenius Standard starts at $24 a month with annual billing, or $28 when billed monthly. It includes online booking, payment processing, and marketing tools.
• Mangomint. Mangomint starts at approximately $130 a month for a solo operator, with core business management features included. Optional phone, marketing, and payroll services are available separately.
• Boulevard. Boulevard's Essentials plan starts at $143 a month per location and includes up to five bookable calendars. Higher-tier plans and optional services provide additional capabilities.
• Zenoti. Zenoti provides salon, spa, and medspa management software, including scheduling, client management, payments, and business operations tools. Pricing is available through its sales team.

General purpose.

• Acuity Scheduling. Acuity provides online booking, appointment management, and client scheduling tools for a wide range of service businesses rather than focusing exclusively on salons and spas.

Even when a marketplace charges no commission, there is something else to consider: your business appears alongside competing salons, often with their prices, promotions, availability, and customer reviews just a click away.

A client who originally found your business through your own marketing may discover other providers while browsing the marketplace. Depending on the platform, customers may also receive recommendations or promotional offers from competing businesses.

Marketplaces can be a valuable way to attract new customers, but they also create another channel through which those customers can discover your competitors.

Before joining, ask whether you can direct clients to your own booking page, maintain access to their contact information, and export your client and appointment records if you decide to leave.

A free marketplace listing can be valuable. Just make sure you understand how it affects your relationship with your customers.
